What Is The Registered Behavior Technician Exam?

The Registered Behavior Technician exam refers to the final exam that RBT candidates need to pass in order to obtain their RBT certification. The exam takes place once the candidates have already completed their RBT competency assessment and passed mandatory background checks. 

Eligibility Requirements For The RBT Exam

To apply for the RBT exam, you must fulfill the following requirements:

• You must be at least 18 years old.
• You must have a high school or equivalent education.
• You must pass a criminal background check.
• You must pass an abuse registry check.
• You must complete the 40-hour RBT training. 
• You must pass the initial competency assessment.

How To Schedule The RBT Exam?

You can take the RBT exam at any one of the official Pearson Vue’s testing centres. You can find a list of all the approved test sites here. 

You can directly schedule the exam with your Pearson Vue account or contact their customer support. You’ll have to pay a $45 appointment fee at the time of scheduling.

Note that if you cancel or reschedule 31 days before the scheduled exam appointment, you can cancel or reschedule the appointment for free. However, if you reschedule it 5-30 days before the appointment, you’ll have to pay a $27 fee. 

And if you try to cancel or reschedule the appointment less than 48 hours before the exam, you’ll have to pay a $32 fee in addition to the $45 you’ve paid already.

Types of RBT Exam Questions

So, how many questions are on the RBT exam? The short answer’s 85. 

That’s right, you’ll have to answer a total of 85 MCQs from six major ABA domains to provide a demonstration of your knowledge on the field before you can receive the RBT certification. 

Of the 85 questions, 10 are essentially pilot questions. They are designed to obtain the exam feedback from the RBT candidates for an overall assessment.

Scoring Pattern of The RBT Exam 

The BACB employs the modern Angoff method to facilitate the scoring pattern of the RBT exam. Each section is marked differently, and you’ll have to score a minimum of 200 out of 250 to pass the RBT exam. That means, out of 75 MCQs, you’ll have to get at least 68 right to pass the exam. 

While this scoring pattern may seem obtuse at first glance, it’s actually criterion-referenced. Hence, the passing score is first determined by a panel of BACB-certified subject matter experts and later on, approved by the board of BACB directors as well. 

The scoring pattern is also heavily dependent on the current RBT (2nd ed) Task List. The pattern will change with the publication of a new task list i.e. with the addition of new content. 

What’s The Time Limit Of The RBT Exam?

The RBT exam maintains a strict time limit of 90 minutes. Within 90 minutes, you have to answer 75 marked multiple choice questions and 10 unmarked ones. 

How Long Does It Take To Publish The Results of The RBT Exam?

You’ll receive the results at the testing site as soon as you complete the examination. As the exam is MCQ-based, it takes only a second for the OMR machine to churn out the results.

You’ll further receive a confirmation via the email. It may take up to a week for the result to show up in your BACB account. If you pass, you’ll need a supervisor/coordinator to add you as a supervisee to officially activate your RBT certification. 

What To Do If You Can’t Crack The RBT Exam On The First Try?

The BACB Annual Data Report shows that only 74% of the first-time candidates passed the RBT exam in 2023. That means, 26% of the first-timers didn’t make the cut. 

If you can’t crack the RBT exam on the first try, do not lose all hope by any means. The RBT exam is not a one-time exam, thankfully. You can retake the exam multiple times if needed. 

Here’s a brief to-do guide in case you can’t score the passing mark the first time around:

1. Wait For A Week

There’s a 7-day waiting period if you wish to retake the RBT exam right away. Once the results have been published, you have to wait for seven whole days before you can take it again. 

Also, you’ll need to pay a $45 exam fee to Pearson Vue for every retake. So, it’ll cost you more money with every failed attempt. 

2. Reassess Your Current Result

The RBT exam result is usually published within the day of the exam. In your BACB account, you’ll receive a detailed report of the exam performance. While waiting for the next exam, it’s important to review this report thoroughly. 

Find your weak points and mark them down separately. For instance – a lot of candidates struggle with the measurement section as they can’t remember the exact formulas.

Hence, it’s important to identify the weak links to do better in the next exam. By reassessing, you need to study the relevant sections prominently. 

3. Take Your Time

If you do exceptionally poorly on your first try, we’d highly recommend taking some time to reevaluate your entire preparation. Take more than 7 days and go through the 40-hour course materials attentively before you retake the exam. Additionally, go through the RBT Task List again to see if you missed anything during the first time around.

4. Do Practice Tests

Reminder – the BACB application to become an RBT has a 12-month time frame. Within this timeframe, you can retake the exam for a maximum of 8 times only. So, prepare wisely.

Create a 2-month Study Plan

If you want to work as an RBT, we’d highly recommend giving 2 months of your time to complete the entire process. Knock out the 40-hour course and the competency assessment within the 1st month, and prepare for the RBT exam in the 2nd month.

Craft an Efficient Study Schedule/Plan

To cover all the items in time, divide the topics and craft a study plan accordingly. Here’s a sample study schedule for your convenience:

• Week 1: Focus on the Measurement section only. Study and practice behavioral data charts, memorize the formulas, and apply those formulas to solve previous RBT exam questions. 
• Week 2: Focus on Assessment and Behavior Reduction sections. Understand patterns, and solve role-play questions to stage appropriate interventions for at-risk clients.
• Week 3: Focus on the Skill Acquisition section. You’ll have to answer 24 MCQs from this section alone so set apart a whole week to read through the materials properly. 
• Week 4: Touch up on Documentation and Reporting alongside RBT ethical guidelines. Understand the ethical boundaries and memorize the RBT regulations.
• Week 5-end: Revise, revise, and revise. Revisit the flashcards on a daily basis, take mock tests to test your preparation, identify the weak areas, and work on them repeatedly. 

Be Consistent

Instead of reading for a long time only on the weekends, try to be consistent. Read 1-2 hours everyday and revise the previous items everyday to memorize them.

How long can I wait after passing the competency test to sit for the RBT exam?

You can wait for up to 3 months after completing the competency assessment to sit for the RBT exam. The assessment comes with an expiry date of 90 days i.e. 3 months. If you fail to take the final RBT exam within this timeframe, you’ll have to retake the competency assessment again. 

Do I have to reapply for the RBT certification even after passing the exam?

Yes, once you become an RBT, you’ll need to go through a 1-year recertification cycle. That means, after two years of becoming an RBT, you’ll have to reapply to renew your RBT certificate. 

Important reminder – you have to complete the recertification competency assessment and recertification application at least 45 days before the expiration date of your RBT certification. 

Can I apply for the RBT certification from outside of the United States?

As of 2025, outside of the United States, you can apply for RBT certification if you’re from Canada, United Kingdom, or Australia. 

However, Ontario residents won’t be able to apply for RBT certification from June 30, 2026, UK residents from January 1, 2026, and Australia residents from January 1, 2027. Pre-certified residents can maintain their BACB certification. So, if you can take the RBT exam before 2025 ends, you can maintain your RBT certification. 

How much will I need to pay to sit for the RBT exam?

To sit for the RBT exam, you’ll need to pay a $50 certification application processing fee to BACB. From 2026, you’ll need to pay $65 instead of $50. Afterward, you’ll need to pay a $45 exam appointment fee to Pearson VUE to book your slot. Hence, you’ll need to pay a total of $95 to sit for the RBT exam in 2025, and $110 in 2026. 

Do RBTs work solo upon receiving certification?

No, upon receiving certification, RBTs practice under an RBT supervisor. If a supervisor is unavailable, they can work with an RBT Requirements Coordinator. Until further status updates, the supervisor and/or the coordinator stays responsible for the RBT’s work.
