Domain A Overview

Understanding Data Collection & Measurement in ABA

Data collection is the backbone of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). As a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT), you will spend a significant portion of your sessions collecting data on target behaviors. This data is critical because it tells the supervising Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) whether a client is progressing, regressing, or staying the same, and whether the intervention plan needs adjustment.

Measurement procedures are divided into two main categories: continuous measurement (recording every instance of a behavior) and discontinuous measurement (recording behavior during intervals of time). RBTs must master both continuous types (frequency, duration, latency, and IRT) and discontinuous types (partial interval, whole interval, and momentary time sampling), along with permanent product recording.

Use our free flashcards to test your knowledge of these core measurement terms, commit their definitions to memory, and practice retrieving them quickly. Consistent daily practice is the most effective way to guarantee success on this portion of the BACB exam!
