What is the RBT competency assessment?
The RBT Competency Assessment is a performance-based evaluation administered by a qualified BCBA or BCaBA on behalf of the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB). Unlike the written RBT exam, this assessment is entirely practical — your job is to show that you can apply Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) skills accurately in real or simulated situations, not just explain them on paper.
Think of it as your "final driving test" for ABA therapy. You're not writing paragraphs about what you'd do — you're demonstrating it in real time with a client or through role-play under direct observation. Every single task must be passed; partial credit does not exist. The BACB requires a 100% pass rate across all 19 task items to qualify for certification.

Eligibility & Rules: Key requirements before you begin
The BACB sets strict eligibility rules that apply to both you and your assessor. Missing any of these will invalidate your assessment, so review them carefully before scheduling.
Candidate requirements
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- Hold a high school diploma or equivalent
- Complete a BACB-approved 40-hour training program
- Pass a criminal background check
- Create a BACB account before assessment day (your ID must appear on the form)
- Complete assessment no more than 90 days before submitting your application
Assessor requirements (BACB-mandated)
- Must be an actively certified BCBA or BCaBA
- Must have completed the 8-hour BACB supervision training
- Must be employed at the same organization as, or have a contractual relationship with, the applicant and client(s)
- Must not be related to, subordinate to, or employed by the RBT being assessed
- Must verify client suitability for live demonstration tasks
Three ways tasks are evaluated
Your assessor has three approved formats to evaluate your performance. The method used for each task depends on what the BACB specifies. Critically, at least three tasks from the Skill Acquisition and Behavior Reduction section (tasks 6–14) must be demonstrated with an actual client — role-play or interview alone is not sufficient for those.
With a client
You perform the task live during a real client session. At least 3 tasks require this format.
Role-play
You simulate the task with your assessor acting as a stand-in client. Accepted for most tasks.
Interview
You explain the task verbally. Note: as of 2026, Tasks 1–3 (Measurement) no longer allow interview-only format.
The total task count was reduced from 20 to 19, and Tasks 1–3 in the Measurement domain now require a live client demonstration or role-play. Interview-only answers for these tasks will no longer be accepted.

Waiting too long to find an assessor
Candidates often finish their 40-hour training without a BCBA lined up, burning through their 90-day window in a frantic search. Network and secure an assessor before training ends.
Passive study instead of active practice
Watching videos or re-reading notes won't prepare you for a performance-based evaluation. Actively simulate tasks, narrate your steps, and get feedback on your form.
Inconsistent prompting without a plan
Switching between prompt levels without a clear rationale signals disorganized technique. Know your prompt hierarchy and follow the client's behavior plan exactly as written.
Delayed or missed reinforcement
Reinforcement delivered even a few seconds late loses its power. Assessors watch for immediacy — praise and reinforce the moment the target behavior occurs.
Overstepping your role as an RBT
Acting too independently, making decisions above your scope, or failing to escalate safety concerns are serious flags. Know when to consult your BCBA — and say so out loud if the assessor asks.
Missing your BACB account ID on the form
An incomplete form will not be accepted by the BACB. Create your account before the assessment and confirm your ID is written on the competency assessment document on assessment day.
What's new in 2026 — key updates from BACB
The BACB made several meaningful updates to the RBT certification system effective January 1, 2026. If you trained under prior requirements, review these carefully before applying.

19 tasks instead of 20
The initial competency assessment was streamlined from 20 to 19 task items to align with the new 3rd Edition Test Content Outline (TCO). The structure and domain coverage remains similar.

Annual renewal assessment phased out
RBTs recertifying in 2028 and beyond will no longer complete annual competency assessments. Instead, certification renews every two years by earning 12 Professional Development Units (PDUs). Those renewing in 2026 complete one final renewal under pre-2026 rules.

Do I need to pass all 19 tasks to pass the assessment?
Yes. Every single one of the 19 tasks outlined in the assessment document must be successfully demonstrated to your assessor. There is no partial credit or scoring curve; candidates must meet a 100% mastery threshold to earn their supervisor signature.
Can my supervisor conduct my competency assessment?
Yes. In fact, having your direct clinical supervisor (BCBA or BCaBA) conduct the assessment is the most common path. The assessor must meet BACB guidelines, meaning they are actively certified, have completed the 8-hour BACB supervision course, and share a professional relationship with you and your clients.
How long does the assessment typically take?
On average, the RBT Competency Assessment takes between 1 to 3 hours. It does not have to be completed in a single session; supervisors often distribute observations across multiple client sessions or separate the roleplay/interview elements from direct clinical work.
What happens if I fail a task during the assessment?
If you perform a task incorrectly, your assessor will pause, provide constructive corrective feedback, and identify your mistakes. They will then give you time to study and practice before scheduling a re-assessment on that specific task. You do not fail the entire exam block immediately, but you must pass all 19 tasks before your paperwork is signed off.
Is the competency assessment the same as the RBT written exam?
No. The competency assessment is a practical, hands-on skill demonstration observed directly by a supervisor. The final RBT exam is a computer-based, written test containing 85 multiple-choice questions taken at an official Pearson VUE testing center.
What is the 90-day rule and how does it affect my schedule?
The BACB mandates that your competency assessment must be completed and submitted as part of your credential application within 90 days of the assessor signing off on the checklist. If you delay submission past this 90-day window, the document expires and you must retake the assessment.
