Domain D Overview

Understanding Behavior Reduction in ABA

Domain D covers 21% of the RBT exam and focuses on behavior reduction plans designed by the BCBA and implemented by the RBT under supervision.

Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP) are formal documents outlining the target challenging behavior, its function, antecedent modifications, replacement behaviors to reinforce, and extinction or crisis guidelines. RBTs must implement them with high fidelity.

Functions of Behavior must be identified to select effective replacement strategies. The four core functions are: Attention, Escape, Access to Tangibles, and Automatic/Sensory reinforcement (remembered via the acronym EATS or SEAT).

Differential Reinforcement is reinforcing a desired behavior while withholding reinforcement for the challenging behavior. Types include DRA (Alternative behavior), DRI (Incompatible behavior), and DRO (Other behavior/reinforcing the absence of behavior).

Extinction is withholding reinforcement for a behavior that was previously reinforced. When extinction is first implemented, a temporary increase in the rate, intensity, or duration of the behavior may occur, known as an extinction burst.
