Domain E Overview

Understanding Documentation & Reporting in ABA

Domain E covers 10% of the RBT exam and focuses on how RBTs document sessions, report clinical observations, and maintain client records ethically.

Session Notes must be objective, meaning they record observable and measurable facts (e.g., "The client engaged in 3 instances of hitting," rather than "The client was angry today"). They must describe behavioral patterns, interventions used, and client responses.

HIPAA Compliance requires RBTs to protect client privacy. This includes storing data securely, avoiding sharing identifying information in public, and following agency policies for data transmission.

Mandatory Reporting is the legal obligation to report suspected abuse, neglect, or exploitation of vulnerable populations (like children or dependent adults). RBTs must immediately report concerns to their supervisor and follow state laws.

Data Integrity ensures that clinical data is accurate, complete, and recorded in a timely manner. Decisions about behavior plans rely heavily on this data, so accuracy is critical.
