By now, you are already familiar with the term RBT (Registered Behavior Technician). But if you are new, you are in the right place!

The Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) certificate is for interested candidates who want to serve others with their behavior under a supervisor. They are the most important members and the only team members who directly communicate with clients using Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA).

That is, they work one-on-one primarily. When needed, they can work in groups with clients who have developmental issues. RBTs teach them proper behaviour, new skills, and help with difficult behaviors.

Now, what does having an RBT certificate mean?

In one sentence, having the RBT credential means you can be trusted.  You are familiar with and good at the basic ways of using Applied Behaviour Analysis. Sounds fun?

This will require you to sit for an exam, training, and practice. Don’t worry, this guide is your ultimate guide for the RBT exam so that you can ace it.

This guide will explain the entire test (the question pattern and given time), the topics you need to study (like testing, tracking, teaching skills, helping with problem behaviors, how to keep records, and how to act professionally), the best ways to study with real-life examples to try-out your knowledge, and solve common questions about all the requirements to take this exam. So you are going to get the complete study guide for the RBT Exam as a beginner.

Overview: What is the RBT Exam?

In this section, we will go through all the topics that the RBT examinations cover. You will know the purpose of this exam and the question pattern elaborately.

First of all, what is the purpose of this examination? For those who are interested, the RBT exam assesses your understanding of ABA concepts. It teaches you ethical practice and practical skills needed for direct client work as described in the BACB RBT Task List. Basically, you have to directly interact with your clients.

The format of this exam is a bit different. It will have 85 multiple-choice questions (10 unscored), 90 minutes to complete.

Each of the multiple-choice questions will have four answer options and only one correct answer.

Here comes the six main domains of the examination.

  1. Measuring Behavior: You must learn how to count and track behavior correctly. This will teach you different ways to measure and how to look at the data on a graph.
  2. Evaluating that Behavior: This part is called Assessment of the data. Here, you have to understand different tests and check out the reason behind them. We call it ‘functional assessment’, and to find out what a person likes (preference assessment), or to find out the skills they have.
  3. Skill Acquisition: The most important domain in this exam. If you haven’t heard about it, we wrote an article explaining all the details. In short, this is actually knowing all the ways to teach people new things. We teach all types of teaching methods, be it DTT, NTT, chaining, gradually shaping a behaviour, prompting, and reinforcement.
  4. Behavior Reduction: In this step, the trainer learns how to decrease bad behavior or behaviors that are difficult or improper. This also involves understanding the underlying reasons behind the behaviour.
  5. Documentation and Reporting: An RBT must know how to collect data correctly, draw neat graphs, document them, and communicate clearly about the client’s information with the responsible supervisor.
  6. Professional Conduct and Scope of Practice: You must follow the rules and practice according to the rules, keeping your morals in check.

Pro Tip: All the questions you will see will be scenario-based, not basic multiple-choice questions. The motive is to see how you will react in actual situations similar to this.

Exam Content Areas Breakdown: The Ultimate Roadmap

The roadmap to a successful journey to get an RBT certificate is quite easy, unlike the popular belief that you need to work very hard.

Yes, it will need sincere work. But the hard part? We got it covered for you.

All about measurements: How do RBTs measure and record behavior?

All the techniques are ABA certified, and one must excel in these skills to get certified. If you want to excel in this part, you must remember to–

  • Take precise data and excel in data collection
  • Have to have and know discontinuous and continuous measurements
  • You need to understand and record permanent product procedures
  • You must know how to trace, enter, and graph the collected data.

How do RBTs actually do that?

Think of measurement in this way – look closely and observe. What is that person actually doing? What is he thinking?

And why are we doing this?

  • To observe if their work is according to their plan.
  • To see if we need to make any changes or if any help is needed.

As an RBT, you need to be cautious of a few things and note them all down.

  • You must be fair and stick to actual facts. Do not let your personal feelings and emotions get in the way.
  • You have to use the Agreed-Upon “Name” for the Behavior: Everyone on the team needs to agree on exactly what the behavior looks like.
  • You have to remember to keep your scoreboard active with updates from each data collection. Whenever you collect data, it is important to input that in the document so that you can see the progress through charts or graphs.

Examples:

If you take the data at every instance, that’s continuous measurement data. If you are checking that data after a certain time interval, then it is a discontinuous measurement.

All about Assessment: How do RBTs help determine what skills a client has or needs?

RBTs have to be in direct contact with the clients. That way, they can understand what their client needs or if they even need anything.

But that requires a long process. How do they do that?

It is all about taking notes. But it does not end there. The key skills that you need to acquire for this are listed below:

  • You need to assist your clients with regular assessments (could be mundane work)
  • You need to observe their behavior and implement probes as suggested
  • You will need to share what you have observed with supervisors

Explanation:

This assessment is based on the judgment of the RBT. If we narrow it down, it is basically figuring out three things:

  1. Find out what the client can do.
  2. Find out if they can follow orders.
  3. Observe what makes them excited or happy.
  4. Make decisions according to that.
  5. Observe if they need any help to learn or change.

About the personal judgment of RBTs, they should also follow the ABA principles. You will only use the following ways:

  • Preference Assessments: This is all about finding out what things the client prefers.
  • Skill Assessments: Making sure that the person has the right skill to initiate the next step.
  • Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs): The Client should be observed if they are going through a difficult behavior, and must understand the underlying reason causing this behavior.

Example:

You can offer a client different toys to see which one they like most to help identify potential reinforcers.

All about Skill Acquisition: How do RBTs help clients learn new skills?

We have already written an in-depth article on this one. But if you are in a hurry –

These are the skills you need to master:

  • You need to be able to read and go through a written skill acquisition plan
  • You have to prepare session materials as instructed
  • You need to implement the said teaching procedures

Explanation:

If you are thinking that this is only teaching, and nothing else, this is where you are wrong. This is not just teaching. This is breaking those steps into micro-steps, teaching with a lot of patience and practice, and celebrating if successful.

This doesn’t apply to all clients, and that’s where it’s different from other techniques. Each client should be observed and then prescribed their teaching styles according to how they respond to them. You will use methods like chaining, reinforcement, prompting, etc, to teach them and help them in their daily activities.

Example:

RBTs use required teaching methods for each client according to their needs. If you say, “Show me red,” and they respond correctly, then give a reward.

Behavior Reduction: How do RBTs help decrease challenging behaviors?

Quite easy if you are a patient lad. Here’s what you need to do:

  • You need to go through a written behavior reduction plan
  • Find out the causes behind those behavior
  • Implement environmental changes or altering triggers (altering triggers)
  • Use suitable methods for that particular client

Explanation:

RBTs play a huge role in altering behavior by using methods to lessen improper behavior, undesirable actions. They implement strategies approved by ABA to help replace those with positive ones.

This is not an easy path. It needs understanding the function or reason for the incorrect behavior. Then the RBT must follow the intervention plan.

Example:

A child might scream and throw tantrums if he doesn’t get something that he wants. RBT will sketch a plan to teach them the right behavior. They will teach them to request with words, and only give them that when they do so.

Documentation and Reporting: How do RBTs communicate about client progress?

An easy one, this is exactly what you are expecting –

  • You must record accordingly and submit session notes to your supervisor
  • You must have the ability describe events accurately
  • You need to communicate with your supervisors if you need to change anything

Example:

Do not be vague with your reports. Try writing ‘Client did 4 tasks today’ instead of ‘Client did great today’.

Professional Conduct and Scope of Practice: How do RBTs act ethically and professionally?

RBTs have codes to maintain when in practice and it is very important to know them beforehand for a quick work whenever needed. If you’re asked about the ethics, codes, conduct, etc., you are expected to abide by the ABA principles.

You need to follow the BACB ethical code. It does not end there; you have to work within your training and supervision limits to test your limit with it.

This one goes without saying but you must maintain the code of service. That is, everything about the patient should be kept confidential and should be respected at any cost.

RBTs must report to its supervisor it they can suspect any abuse or misconduct that the client might be facing.

Example:

In many cases, the parents become frustrated with the child’s improper behaviour. It has been reported that in these cases, the child might get abused by parents as punishment. RBTs must report it as abuse to the supervise as the treatment is not going according to plan.

FAQs: About Common RBT Exam Questions

What is the minimum pass marks?

Not defined. It follows the grade boundary system and is influenced each year through analysis of your competitors marks. To be on the safe side, aim to get at least 60/75 (scored items) correct.

Do every question carry the same marks?

Yes. But there is a twist. Ten of the 85 are “test” questions and won’t be counted in your test score. But these 10 questions are not marked, so you won’t know which.

What if I fail?

Nothing to worry about. You can retake and attempt for the second time after a waiting period.

Can you suggest some key terms and concepts to know?

While you mustn’t rely on this entirely, here are some repeated words:

  • Antecedent: Incident that happens before a behavior.
  • Consequence: Result that happens after a behavior.
  • Reinforcement: Increases the likelihood of behavior.
  • Extinction: Withholding reinforcement, reduction of a certain behavior.

Give me an Example Scenario Breakdown.

Scenario: “A client starts crying when asked to clean up. What should you document?”

Correct Approach: Write the scenario you observed in exact words:
“Client was asked to clean up. Client started crying after being confused for a few seconds. Staff said, ‘Please let us know how we can help.’

How often is the RBT exam updated?

Periodically, check the website for updates.

What if English isn’t my first language?

No problem, you may be entitled to accommodations. You need to contact BACB before scheduling.

Can I take notes during the exam?

You will be provided a whiteboard or scratch paper at the test center. Contact your test center beforehand.

What should you do on the test day?

Keep your head cool! – That’s it. But if you are looking for serious advices –

You must arrive at least an hour early with valid photo ID. Make sure there is no personal item with you in the test center. Read each question carefully and repeatedly before answering.

Attempt the easier ones first, this will boost your confidence.

Stay calm and you’re good to go!

What should you do after the exam?

You must get ready for your next step that requires hands-on experience.

We recommend everyone to start reading the RBT Handbook and map your study plan according to the contents of it. You can use whatever study technique that suits you.

Check your progress with your supervisors/partners.
