RBT Certification Renewal: What’s New, When to Do It & How to Prepare?

To become a Registered Behavior Technician, you need months of hard work and dedication. Before you can practice with a license, you need to pass a background check, a competency assessment, and finally, the RBT exam itself. 

However, the journey doesn’t end there. If you wish to continue your status as an active RBT, you will need to renew your certificate every couple of years. 

That’s right. It’s a simple, easy-going process that allows the authorities to reevaluate your competency as a practicing RBT. As the ABA i.e. Applied Behavior Analysis fields depend on mass research and behavioral spectrums, the renewal procedure is necessary to ensure that all RBTs stay updated.

RBT Certification Renewal: How To Renew Your RBT Certification In 2026?

The new guidelines and 3rd Edition RBT Task List is set to go into effect on January 1, 2026. This will bring about a change for both old and new RBTs. 

RBT certificate-holders need the following documentation to renew their certification –

• Proof of ongoing supervision or continuing education from a qualified BCBA or BCaBA in compliance with supervision requirements 
• Updated background check/abuse registry check 
• Documentation of 40-hour training completion
• Documentation of RBT Test results

Additionally, the RBTs are required to take a recertification competency assessment before they can renew their certification.

This competency assessment can be divided into two primary sub-assesments – 1) A skill-based assessment, and 2) An ethics-based assessment. The former doubles down on the RBT’s expertise on technical skills while the latter helps to evaluate his knowledge on ethical ABA guidelines and execution. 

Like the RBT test, the RBT recertification competency assessment is an MCQ-based evaluation. You’ll need to answer 50 multiple-choice items set to test your knowledge on the major RBT domains and tasks. 

To pass, you’ll need to score 80% or higher in the competency assessment. If you fail to get a minimum of 80%, you’ll need to retake the assessment.

Candidates must submit the assessment results alongside the necessary paperwork in their renewal application. Upon paying the renewal fee, they need to wait up to 2 weeks to receive an email confirmation of renewal acceptance.

So, what’s changing with the RBT renewal process in 2026 then?

From 2026, certified RBTs will no longer need to complete the annual recertification competency assessments to renew their certification. 

That means, they won’t need to retake the assessment every year to maintain their certification. Additionally, the renewal process is moving on from a one-year cycle to a two-year one. So, instead of renewing your license every 12 months, you have to now do it every 24 months instead. 

So, no competency assessments for recertification needed at all?

No, recertification competency assessments aren’t going extinct right away. Especially if you have obtained your RBT certification before January 1, 2026. 

Here’s how the new update is going to work for Registered Behavior Technicians whose certificates are set to expire in 2026 –

According to BACB’s Newsletter, if old (RBTs who have had their certification processed before 2026) certificants wish to renew their certification in 2026, they must complete the 2025-end RBT maintenance requirements one last time before they can officially shift to the two-year RBT certification cycle. 

That means, even with the 2026 update, they will still need to complete the Renewal Competency Assessment for recertification. Once they have been recertified in 2026, they will officially begin the two-year recertification cycle. 

So, they will need to apply for recertification again in 2028. During that time, they will need to meet the 2026 maintenance requirements per BACB. 

What are the 2026 RBT maintenance requirements?

From 2026, instead of recertification competency assessments, RBT certificants will need to complete 12 PDUs (Professional Development Units) instead. 

They will need to complete these units every two years instead of taking an annual recertification competency assessment for a renewal.

Which requirements will stay the same?

Whether you apply for recertification before or after January 1, 2026, you’ll still need to provide necessary documentation of RBT results, registry check, etc. 

However, most importantly, you have to submit proof of ongoing supervision. And these supervision rules aren’t going to change in the 2026 update.

Here are the rules that you have to meet for ongoing supervision –

• You have to be supervised by a qualified supervisor.
• The supervisor must add you as a supervisee in their BACB account.
• You have to meet face-to-face at least twice.
• You have to sit for individual meetings at least once.
• You have to receive supervision for at least 5% of the overall service hours every month. 

That means, if you work a total of 100 hours in a month as a certified RBT, your designated supervisor must supervise you directly for at least 5 of those hours. 

When To Renew Your RBT Certification?

You should start the RBT certification renewal process roughly 45 days before the expiration date of your certification. 

And here’s why – first, you’ll need to gather the necessary documentation (proof of supervision, background clearance sheet, etc.) for the preliminary application. Afterward, you’ll need to complete the recertification assessment to send in your application for approval. 

You will need to submit the application at least 30 days before your RBT certificate expires, hence, you need to complete the assessment before that. 

If you start on the renewal procedure 45 days before the expiration date, you’ll get around 15 days to complete the assessment efficiently. 

For instance, if you fail to get the passing score on your first try, you can retake it again within these two weeks. That way, you won’t have to face a rush. 

How Much Does It Cost For RBT Certification Renewal?

From 2026, RBT certificants will need to pay a renewal fee of $50 for recertification. In the previous update, candidates needed to pay $35.

While this seems like a hike at first glance, it’s important to remember that now RBT certificants need to pay the renewal fee every two years. So, in the annual recertification system, they would need to pay a ($35+$35) i.e. $70 renewal fee. 

Whereas, from 2026, they will need to pay only $50 every two years. 

Again, if RBT certificants fail to apply for recertification 30 days prior to the expiration date, they will need to pay a $50 late fee. 

How To Prepare For Your RBT Certification Renewal?

Here are a few tips to help you with the RBT certification renewal process:

Keep Your Official Documents Organized

Keep all the documents related to your RBT certification (including the official mails) intact and organized. That way, you won’t have a tough time finding them while renewing your RBT certification. 

Keep Proof Of Ongoing Education 

From January 1, 2026, instead of competency assessments, RBT certificants will need to complete 12 PDU (Professional Development Units) instead. To simplify the renewal process, complete these units in time and keep proof of completion. 

Double-Check All Entries Before Submission 

To expedite the RBT renewal process, always double check every single entry on the application form before the final submission. Oftentimes, applications get rejected due to the silliest errors on the submission forms. 

For instance – not writing full names, making spelling mistakes, giving out the wrong address, etc. These issues can lead to application rejection and a ton of bureaucratic problems in the long run.
